Finding a job can be a daunting task for anyone. Often, there are many applications from jobseekers for one job but you can put yourself one step ahead by enabling yourself to explore every available job hunting resource. Online job boards have become an essential platform for those searching for a job and there are many hidden opportunities just waiting to be found!

Of course, the larger and well known job boards are where most people go when they wish to view available jobs but have you considered exploring job boards that are tailored to roles specific to the industry you are interested in? These platforms often feature job listings that may not be widely known or advertised on the more generalised websites.

Many of these job boards offer advanced search filters that allow you to refine your search criteria. You can use these filters to condense your search to specify your preferences such as job type, choice of location and preferred salary. The more you condense your search , the easier it becomes to pinpoint the opportunities that are available and those that align with your preferences. Do not rely on one single job board or source of information. You should be exploring multiple job boards and industry specific forums to cast a wider net and find hidden opportunities.

On most job boards you are able to set up job alerts that will notify you when jobs become available that are within your specified criteria. Setting up these alerts can save much time especially if you have set your preference to be notified as soon as there is a vacancy.

If it is a certain company that you are interested in working for, do not limit your search solely to job boards. Many companies will list job openings on their own website in addition to job boards. This proactive approach will enable you to discover openings within the company as well as keeping up to date with their latest news which will be beneficial if you secure an interview. Additionally, use social media platforms to follow companies and organisations to be kept informed of both company news and latest job vacancies.

I can not stress enough how important it is to use keywords when searching for jobs online. Think beyond the job title itself and put in specific skills, qualifications and  technological expertise you may have. This will further help you to find positions that match your criteria.

The power of networking can not be underestimated when searching for jobs online. Attend industry related events, join professional groups and connect with professionals on various platforms. These connections can often lead to job opportunities that may not be publicly advertised, directly or indirectly.

Online job boards are a valuable resource for job seekers but the key to success lies in your own ability to uncover hidden opportunities. By exploring specialised boards, utilising advanced search features and staying proactive in your search, you can improve your chances of finding a job. Networking is sometimes a case of who you know so always be receptive to new contacts. Using some or all of these strategies can help you discover hidden gems of jobs and at the same time, advance your career.
