Going to university is much more than attending lectures and doing vast amounts of studying, it is also a fantastic opportunity to broaden your horizons through the many and varied extra curricular activities that are offered. At most universities, there is a vibrant array of societies and clubs that cater to a wide range of individual interests and passions. Deciding to participate in societies can be an extremely enriching experience and the reasons are many.

Engaging in activities outside of your normal studies helps to maintain a healthy balance between both academic and personal life and provides a perfect way in which to unwind and to recharge yourself. Also knowing that you can actively participate in your new interest with all of the available resources at university will invariably increase your passion. These various societies can introduce you to activities that you may not have previously considered or have had the necessary tools at your disposal.

Societies are great platforms for meeting like minded individuals, forming lasting friendships and building a supportive network around you. Whether you are shy or outgoing, you will become a part of a wider collective who are connected through mutual interests.

Joining a society can also help you refine any existing skills and acquire new ones. Furthermore, leadership roles or any active role within societies can further enhance your personal and professional development.

Often at the start of each academic year, universities will hold what is commonly known as a Freshers Fair or Open Day which is the ideal opportunity to find out exactly what will be on offer that may interest you and accompanying resources. Many universities will be able to offer you a taster of the activity you are interested in and give you more information while meeting other students who are already involved.

Subject based societies allow students to deepen their academic interests also and offer enriching experiences which can enhance skills such as writing, organising or leadership while still exploring topics related to your degree work. In addition to academic based interests and hobbies, there will be numerous sports clubs which can provide new athletic challenges and social opportunities where you can build on strong friendships and try new experiences such as competing against other universities.

Of course, if you find that no society exists that matches your interests then you could become the founder of one yourself and will invariably be fully supported in your effort!

University provides a platform to meet and connect with both peers and professionals and these connections can be instrumental later on in your job searches by offering mentorships, references and potential job leads. Active involvement in clubs and societies will make you stand out and employers like candidates who have demonstrated initiative, commitment and the ability to balance multiple responsibilities.

At university, the diverse range of clubs and societies provide an essential outlet for personal growth, skill development and for forming lasting connections. Whether you are exploring new interests or deepening existing passions that have already been ignited, participating can enhance your university experience so embrace every opportunity and start creating lasting memories which are focused beyond the classroom!
