In this modern day where practically everything is somehow governed by technology, it is essential to be competent and confident in digital skills. For the UK graduate, it has never been more crucial to possess strong proficiency in this area especially when embarking on a first job or a successful career where these skills are either essential or desirable. In this article, I will highlight some of the more valued skills that you should aim to be competent in. Of course not all jobs require them but many do, therefore a sound background in technology is key to progression and more often than not, in high demand.

Digital literacy covers a wide spectrum of skills proving that you have a basic but sound understanding of computer software, hardware, different operating systems and a host of other commonly used tools. You should be comfortable with using technology for various tasks as it is rapidly replacing other ways of doing things and becoming more and more advanced by the day.

Being proficient in both collaboration and communication tools starting with commonly used and simple email techniques and video conferencing platforms to the ability to project software and use various applications is also essential. This is usually one of the most basic forms of technology that people become aware of. Excellent virtual communication skills are highly sought after and is something that will be used continually throughout the day to speak to different disciplines in various settings from around the globe.

You must be able to understand digital marketing techniques and these include search engine optimisation which is essential for improving visibility of your websites in search engines and used commonly by companies to attract larger numbers of clients, visitors and customers. Social media marketing, content creation and analytics proficiency can make you into a knowledgeable and valuable asset to employers who will rely upon your expertise to potentially rapidly expand and grow their company or organisation.

Data analysis is the ability to collect, analyse and interpret data. Becoming familiar with concepts such as data visualisation software and statistical analysis software enables you to provide valuable insight to employers and enhances ability to make important business decisions based upon the data.

Basic coding techniques such as HTML, Javascript and similar programmes can prove highly beneficial in many sections and like many other programmes, are fairly common in day to day usage.

Basic skills in multimedia editing software can be valuable in roles that require content creation, marketing or have compelling visual content that requires updating and constant monitoring.

Due to continuing and increasing cyber threats, it is sought after to have an understanding of cybersecurity risks and of how to manage and minimise these as it is essential to have a safe and secure digital environment for all involved.

Specific digital and technological skills vary depending on the job, employer or industry you are working in. Many companies actively encourage employees to participate in courses and workshops to increase their competencies and knowledge. Employers will always value employees who are proactive in upgrading their skills and stay up to date with all the latest ongoing technological advancements.
