The course that you ultimately choose to do at university is a big decision and one that will shape your future career path and personal development. With so many interesting options on offer, it is essential to approach the decision making process with time and thought. There are a number of tips which can help students to navigate through the complexity of what course to choose at university because for many, it is not a straightforward choice.

It is wise to begin the process of choosing your course by conducting a thorough self assessment in which you carefully identify your interests, your strengths, your values and your career aspirations. Reflect on the subjects that you enjoy and excel at and also which activities inspire and motivate you. Then consider your long term goals and how the many different courses would align with what you would like to achieve.

It is going to take considerable time but you must be prepared to explore the diverse range of courses offered by universities and then consider factors such as the content of the course, how courses are assessed and all of the available resources to help you in your studies. See what opportunities may be offered during your course and of course, research the reputation of the universities, including the specific departments. This will be worth the time you spend on it as you sift through the information to ensure quality education and opportunities for advancements in the best possible setting.

Attend open days, tours of campuses and virtual events which will help you gain valuable insights into the different courses and the unique environments of the universities. You may be invited to attend specific talks, meet members of staff and liaise with current students. Accept whatever you can as this will help to gather a lot of information and first impressions that you can use to your advantage. Seek advice and guidance from those you trust to have the wisdom to offer support throughout this difficult decision making process.

Each course will bring with it different career opportunities so evaluate each one carefully, taking note of industry trends, job demand, salary expectations and the various associated career pathways. This will enable you to make informed choices.

Take into consideration practical factors such as fees, living expenses, the university’s location and its accessibility. Carefully analyse any financial support you may be entitled to as well as tailored student support packages which can help with funding and provide resources.

Trust your instinct and your own intuition when making decisions about your university course. Select a course that inspires and excites you, aligns with your passions and goals and will help you grow personally as well as professionally. Stay open minded throughout the decision making process and remain flexible as plans may change. It is a journey of self discovery, knowing that your university experience is just around the corner!
