How To Create A Perfect Job Description When Recruiting

When potential employees are looking for a job, there is so much emphasis on getting their CV ready so it aligns with the job that they are applying for as well as practicing what they may say in an interview. But what about the actual job description itself? Taking time to compile the perfect job description can ensure that you attract the very best potential employees to apply for the job.

So, to attract the talent that is out there and to make certain that you get people of a high standard applying, then you must format the job description effectively so that they naturally gravitate towards your company. Both the job title and the job description needs to stand out from other similar ones, just like a carefully thought out CV should stand out from the rest.

There are several main areas that you should focus on when advertising your vacancy and these are the responsibilities that will need to be undertaken, qualifications and experience that is required and any perks of the job.

In addition to listing these specific areas, it is imperative to use keywords throughout the description. This allows your job vacancy to appear in certain online search results and get you noticed by the right applicants who can align their skills to match your requirements by using the appropriate keywords. There should also be a brief company overview which gives the potential candidate an introduction to the company as well as it’s mission, values and culture

The responsibilities should highlight any ongoing day to day tasks and duties as well as any extra tasks that will be incorporated into the job. The job title should be clear and concise, accurately reflecting the responsibilities. This helps both the employer and the applicant as by having a transparent job description, it minimises the risk of having unsuitable applicants. Only the applicants who feel they can match the specifics will apply as they will already be thinking ahead and seeing themselves fulfilling the role. Within this you should state the hours and times, including shift work and weekend working if applicable. This ensures that the potential employee does not have any unexpected surprises once they commence employment for the company.

Listing the qualifications and experience that you deem necessary will sift the applicants even more, ensuring that the right candidates apply. By clearly stating exactly what it is you are requiring from a candidate, there is a much greater chance of having only the right applicants apply as it can waste a lot of time looking through the application forms of unsuitable applicants. Personal attributes such as soft skills required or desirable for the role can be mentioned in this section.

Finally, by listing any perks or benefits of the job can show to the potential employee that the employer really values the work and commitment of its workforce. This can be shown in a variety of ways e.g. private healthcare, discounted gym membership or even shopping discounts. Pay increments, bonuses, pension and retirement plans can also be mentioned in this section as the candidate needs to be able to visualise having a long and enjoyable career within the company and what this may entail for them.

The application process should explain clearly how to apply and by what deadline. An equal opportunities statement should be included which promotes diversity and equal opportunities and also contact details for enquiries or applications.
