Success is measured in a variety of ways depending on your personality and what you feel is important to you. For some, success could mean a mortgage and a family. For others it could mean being independent and the ability to travel on a regular basis. Other people may regard continuing good health, having lots of friends or driving around in an expensive car as being successful. For many, success is interpreted through peace of mind or a steady well paid job. It's really all about defining your own vision and taking steps to make it happen.

Whatever you deem as success, there are certain rules that you must follow in order for it to happen. In this article, the focus is on how to become successful at your job.

You must remain focused on attaining what you set out to do in order for you to achieve success and not allow yourself to become distracted along the way. For example, you may want to train to become a nurse with the ultimate aim in becoming a ward manager in an Accident and Emergency department. So you should stay clearly focused on this outcome and not let any setbacks or negative experiences detract from what you desire to become. Imagine yourself wearing the name badge with your title and feel your competence for the job. Set small achievable goals for yourself along the way.

Be prepared to put in the hard work and stay committed. Achieving something that you really want to do requires lots of diligence and a positive attitude despite feeling overwhelmed at times. Persevere and always be willing to go that little bit further. Stay passionate and  motivated and keep telling yourself why you are putting in all this hard work. You may have to make certain sacrifices now as you concentrate on learning and pushing yourself forward but keep telling yourself that it will all be worth it in the end. Seek to continuously improve yourself. Be disciplined with yourself and stay consistent in your thoughts.

Surround yourself with like minded people who are dynamic and career minded and who work in a similar professional environment. Their enthusiasm, confidence and knowledge will influence your already positive mindset. Building a strong network of people that you value can also open doors that can accelerate your success.

Do not take any notice of naysayers or negative comments or even major setbacks. Use challenges as opportunities for growth and view failures as learning opportunities. This is about you and not anyone else. No one can tell you what to do or how to do it. Reevaluate the people around you and if you find certain people are affecting you in a negative way then it may be time to get new friends or acquaintances who will support and encourage you.

It is important to bear in mind that everyone has to start somewhere and work their way up the career ladder. Success is a personal journey and it will take time so you must be gentle and patient with yourself while you are working towards success.
