Being asked ‘Where do you see yourself in five years time?’ is a question that you may be asked in an interview situation. It is a classic interviewing question and if you are not prepared for it then it can leave you struggling for an answer that impresses the interviewer. This can in turn compromise your chances of getting the job that you really want.

By answering questions in a confident, concise and coherent manner, it is a chance for potential employees to showcase their career ambitions so the interviewer sees that your answers align with the goals and ethos of the company. It is essential to try and strike a good balance between realism and ambition when answering the question.

Start your response by conveying a clear sense of continuing with your professional growth within the company. Your enthusiasm should be highlighted for your desire to contribute to the company’s success. You should also state that you are willing to experience new challenges and with that, an increasing amount of responsibility.

As you will be working with a new team that you have never met before, so express your eagerness to become an integral and valued member of the workforce and to become a key part of the team’s growth and continued success.

A desire for continuous learning is a factor that should not be overlooked and most employers are wanting to hire a proactive individual who works at a consistently high standard. By committing to developing your skills to adapt to the ever changing industry landscape, it will demonstrate both your dedication and motivation for personal and professional growth as you incorporate fresh ideas and innovation to your role.

Your five year plan should align with the objectives of the company. This is where your prior research of the company will become imperative as you reference the missions, goals and values of the company to illustrate how your own aspirations align perfectly.

The interviewer is looking for you to be authentic in your response but is also seeking a professional and personable mindset. Avoid sounding unrealistic regarding what you wish to achieve in five years or appear inflexible. Instead, just convey your willingness to participate meaningfully to the company during the next five years.

This is your opportunity to seize the chance to showcase your ambition, talent and commitment.Your response should reflect your genuine enthusiasm for the role and your eagerness to integrate so you can become a sought after and valuable asset for the long term success of the company.
