Location guide / Scotland

Living & working
in Glasgow.

Glasgow’s financial, creative and technology businesses sit alongside universities and major public services. The West End, Southside, East End and centre each offer a different setting for life outside work. The Subway connects parts of that map, with other neighbourhoods relying on their own rail and bus routes.

Area averages are not current asking prices or individual property valuations. Local short-term changes are volatile; use a year or longer. UK HPI house-price observations are provisional and subject to revision. Scottish rent inputs are mainly advertised new lets; rents are published for Broad Rental Market Areas, which may differ from the local authority.

01

Work & opportunity

Finance, creative work, technology and public services.

Glasgow's investment agency highlights financial and business services, life sciences, creative and digital work, the green economy, and space technology. Financial-sector specialisms include investment operations, insurance, shared services and legal work. The work includes technical, administrative, analytical and customer-service occupations.

Barclays, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley are established local financial-sector employers. Check each organisation's own careers pages and ask fair exhibitors about exact office location, hybrid expectations, entry routes and supported qualifications. A sector change may start with a familiar skill applied in a different setting.

Make it practical
  • Search by transferable skill and job function.
  • Ask about recognised training and progression.
  • Check whether a role is city-centre or site-based.
02

Homes & cost of living

The centre, West End, Southside and beyond.

Homes & everyday costs

Start with the city centre and Merchant City for a central routine, the West End for its parks and cultural institutions, and the Southside for a different mix of local streets and green space. Walk the route from a shortlisted home to its transport stop and food shops.

The official rent figure shown alongside covers Greater Glasgow. This all-property benchmark covers a wider rental area and is not the asking rent for a particular Glasgow flat. Factor in Council Tax, heating, broadband and transport. Inspect the property itself, including shared access, noise, storage and maintenance arrangements. Scottish rent inputs are mainly advertised new lets, which limits direct comparison with other UK nations.

Make it practical
  • Compare equivalent property sizes and tenancy terms.
  • Ask what bills and furniture are included.
  • Keep a moving budget beyond the deposit.

Getting around

Subway routes and onward connections.

The Subway serves a circular network through the city centre, West End and south of the Clyde. SPT publishes maps, operating times, ticket information and accessibility guidance. It is useful for particular journeys but should not be treated as a network reaching every workplace or neighbourhood.

Use the full workplace address and your start and finish times to compare routes. A home that works well for a central office may need a different plan for an industrial site, hospital or late hospitality shift. Check onward rail or bus connections and your return trip, especially on Sundays and after evening events.

Make it practical
  • Consult SPT's current map and timetable.
  • Check every interchange and final walking section.
  • Confirm accessibility at the stations you will use.

Life beyond work

Neighbourhood venues, museums and parks.

The official neighbourhood guide distinguishes the centre, West End, Southside, East End and North, with Finnieston and Merchant City offering their own character. Museums and galleries, live performance, parks and independent cafés make it possible to build a routine around more than the workplace.

Kelvingrove and the West End are worth exploring if culture and green space are priorities; Merchant City suits a different kind of central outing. Revisit areas during an ordinary weekday as well as a weekend. That will tell you more about the rhythm of a place than a single busy evening.

Make it practical
  • Explore two or three neighbourhoods before choosing.
  • Check current programmes and opening hours.
  • Find a regular local group, class or volunteering opportunity.

Settling in

Scottish housing, healthcare and city services.

Settle in well

Confirm which council covers the property: a Glasgow postal address and the wider urban area do not always mean Glasgow City Council. Use the correct authority for Council Tax, waste, schools and local housing advice. Check parking arrangements and any shared-building responsibilities before agreeing a tenancy.

Use NHS inform to arrange GP registration. If children are moving with you, investigate school and childcare arrangements for the address and your working hours early. Keep an emergency travel option and a contingency for the first month, especially if your work pattern has not yet settled.

Make it practical
  • Confirm the council area using the postcode.
  • Arrange healthcare registration.
  • Check childcare and work journeys as one routine.
