Location guide / Yorkshire

Living & working
in York.

York’s visitor economy sits alongside universities, rail expertise and research activity. The historic centre is only part of its employment map, with campuses and other workplaces beyond it. Museum Gardens and the city’s cultural institutions offer places to get to know York between home viewings and work-related visits.

  • Rail and research strengths
  • Heritage and cultural life
  • Plan beyond the historic centre

01

Work & opportunity

Universities, rail and research-related employment.

The York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority highlights rail, manufacturing, creative and digital activity among regional strengths. A University of York partnership proposal in 2026 focuses on biotechnology, rail technology and creative technology. A proposal describes intended development, not funding already delivered or jobs currently open.

Look at current employer vacancies across research support, education, technical work, administration and visitor services. Ask fair exhibitors where the role is based, what training is offered and whether hours change with the visitor season. The city’s economic strategy also places skills and a thriving workforce among its priorities.

Make it practical
  • Distinguish announced investment from open recruitment.
  • Check whether the job is in York or the wider region.
  • Use National Careers Service for course options.
02

Homes & cost of living

Central homes and journeys to campuses or work sites.

Homes & everyday costs

Use the centre, Holgate, Acomb and Heworth as contrasting search starting points, then test the route to a particular campus or office. These are comparison areas, not claims about price or suitability. Inspect the final walk, storage, heating and everyday shopping access.

The official rent figure shown alongside covers York. It combines property types and existing and new tenancies, so it is not a current asking rent for a flat or room. Compare like-for-like listings and add Council Tax, utilities, broadband and the full commute.

Make it practical
  • Check year-round availability where relevant.
  • Confirm the authority for the exact address.
  • Visit during an ordinary working evening.
03

Getting around

York station, local buses and park and ride.

York station is on Station Road. iTravel York provides local information about buses, park and ride, walking and cycling, with links to the council’s current services. Use it to plan beyond the station or historic centre to the actual workplace.

Test a journey for your expected arrival time and a late return. For shift work, check weekend services too. If driving, include parking and the final walk in the comparison; if cycling, inspect the complete route and storage rather than relying only on map distance.

Make it practical
  • Save an alternative for disruption.
  • Check the final connection after work.
  • Confirm current station assistance requirements.

04

Life beyond work

Museum Gardens and the city’s museums.

York Museum Gardens provides green space in the city centre, while York Museums Trust’s sites and programmes offer cultural options throughout the year. Check current exhibitions, access and opening information directly before making plans.

During a relocation visit, combine heritage with ordinary errands: a food shop, a library or leisure activity and the journey back to a shortlisted address. A routine that works away from the busiest visitor periods helps you assess daily life more clearly.

Make it practical
  • Explore Museum Gardens.
  • Browse the current museum programme.
  • Check evening return transport before booking activities.
05

Settling in

York services and household arrangements.

Make your move

City of York Council provides Council Tax, housing, waste, family, education and travel information. Do not assume neighbouring North Yorkshire services apply to a York address; check the actual boundary, especially when considering villages outside the city.

Prepare the inventory, utilities, employer documents and first-month budget before moving. If you have children, confirm school-admissions arrangements and childcare availability alongside the full working day. Keep application deadlines and fair contacts together so settling in does not interrupt your search.

Make it practical
  • Register with a GP near your address.
  • Check council school-admissions and childcare information.
  • Record meter readings and the property condition.
