Living & working
in Swindon.
Financial services, manufacturing, logistics and technical organisations contribute to Swindon’s economy beyond its railway heritage. Workplaces range from central offices to campuses and employment estates. STEAM, Lydiard House and Park, and Coate Water provide different ways to explore the town when considering a longer-term move.

01Work & opportunity
Financial services, manufacturing and technical employers.
Swindon Borough Council identifies advanced manufacturing, financial and professional services, construction, digital activity, logistics and pharmaceutical manufacturing across Swindon and Wiltshire. Its 2026–2031 growth plan names organisations including Nationwide, Zurich, RWE, the National Trust and UKRI as local anchors.
Ask fair exhibitors about operations, administration, technical support and customer-facing roles as well as specialist occupations. Confirm the site and whether training or work happens elsewhere. The council’s employment information is also useful when changing sectors or looking for support after redundancy.
- Check the exact employer location.
- Ask about progression and paid training.
- Use National Careers Service for course options.
02Homes & cost of living
Central homes and employment-estate connections.
Homes & everyday costs
Use the centre, Old Town and west or north Swindon as contrasting search areas, then test each against the workplace. Check food shopping, gradients, storage and the practical evening route.
The official rent figure shown alongside covers Swindon. This includes existing and new tenancies across property types, not just advertised homes. Compare current listings for the size you need, adding Council Tax, utilities, broadband, travel and parking where relevant.
- Compare similar homes rather than borough averages alone.
- Ask what the rent includes.
- Check the route during your likely shift hours.
03Getting around
Swindon rail arrivals and town bus routes.
Swindon’s National Rail station provides current facilities and service information. Swindon’s Bus Company offers route and journey planning across town. Use these together if the workplace is on an employment estate or campus beyond the centre.
Search for the time you must arrive, then check the return after a normal and a late finish. For driving, include parking and the walk from it. If cycling, inspect the complete route and secure storage rather than relying on a straight-line map.
- Save a disruption alternative.
- Check weekend connections for shift work.
- Confirm the workplace entrance with the employer.
04Life beyond work
Railway heritage, Lydiard and Coate Water.
The council’s leisure directory includes Coate Water, Lydiard House and Park, and Museum & Art Swindon. The local bus operator also lists STEAM in the former railway works as a destination. Check current access and opening information before planning a visit.
Use a relocation visit to try a regular activity as well as a landmark. Walk from the housing shortlist to shops, a park or leisure venue, and test the journey home in the evening. This helps establish how the place would work during an ordinary week.
- Browse current museum and community programmes.
- Explore a green-space route near the prospective home.
- Check transport before booking an evening activity.
05Settling in
Borough services and household administration.
Make your move
Swindon Borough Council provides Council Tax, waste, housing, schools, family and parking information. Addresses in surrounding Wiltshire may have different service arrangements, so confirm the authority before budgeting or making applications.
Prepare an inventory, utility readings and a first-month spending plan. For families, check admissions and childcare availability against the full commute. Save employer contacts and application deadlines from the fair alongside the moving paperwork.
- Register with a GP near your address.
- Check council school-admissions and childcare information.
- Confirm the new waste-collection arrangements.
