Living & working
in Exeter.
The Met Office, education and local services help make Exeter a workplace for a much wider part of Devon. Its historic centre and quayside sit alongside campuses and employment areas farther out. St Davids is a useful rail arrival point, with the onward journey shaping where to live.

01Work & opportunity
Scientific work, education and supporting occupations.
The Met Office has an Exeter office and is a concrete example of the city’s scientific and technical employment. Its careers pages explain the organisation and its application routes.
Map your skills against research support, data, technology, administration, customer-facing work and the broader service economy. Ask fair exhibitors about entry requirements and training as well as job titles. A campus or edge-of-city role can have a different travel pattern from a central employer, especially outside standard office hours.
- Check the employer’s own vacancy page.
- Ask about paid training and progression.
- Use National Careers Service for course options.
02Homes & cost of living
Central homes and outlying workplaces.
Homes & everyday costs
Use the centre, St Thomas and Heavitree as different starting points for viewings, then widen the search around the workplace you need. Check gradients, the route to shops and the condition of the property, rather than choosing only from a map.
The official rent figure shown alongside covers Exeter. This mixes property types and existing and new tenancies, so it is not the asking rent of a room or flat. Build a budget from current listings plus Council Tax, heating, transport and moving costs.
- Check whether the postcode is in Exeter city.
- Compare the same number of bedrooms.
- Ask about storage, heating and included bills.
03Getting around
St Davids station and local Devon connections.
Exeter St Davids is on Bonhay Road. Travel Devon provides local information for planning beyond the rail journey, including buses and active travel. Check the exact workplace entrance and use an arrival-time search rather than comparing only distance.
Trial the route at the hours you expect to work. A late finish or early shift can change a journey that looks straightforward during the day. Check National Rail’s current station information and operator notices for assistance, engineering works and changes.
- Allow for the station-to-work connection.
- Save a late-return option.
- Check the practical route for cycling or walking.
04Life beyond work
The quayside, historic centre and surrounding countryside.
Exeter’s historic quayside brings together walking, activity and food, while the official destination guide covers the city’s heritage, underground passages and surrounding Devon countryside. Check current access and booking arrangements before planning an outing.
A useful relocation visit includes the unglamorous tasks too: grocery shopping, the route to a library or activity and returning after dark. Explore the area around a potential home as well as the centre, and plan countryside trips around a reliable journey back.
- Explore the quayside on foot.
- Browse the current official events listings.
- Test ordinary weekday routines before choosing a home.
05Settling in
Exeter and Devon service responsibilities.
Make your move
Exeter City Council provides city Council Tax, housing and waste information. Devon County Council provides the county-service directory, including education and transport. Check the final postcode if your housing search extends outside Exeter’s boundary.
Prepare the inventory, utilities and first-month budget before moving. If you have children, confirm the relevant admissions process and childcare hours with the provider or authority; a nearby school or nursery should not be treated as a guaranteed place.
- Register with a GP near your address.
- Check council school-admissions and childcare information.
- Keep employer and moving documents together.
