Living & working
in Dundee.

Games, design and life sciences give Dundee a distinctive mix of work, supported by its universities and college. The waterfront brings together cultural destinations, while Broughty Ferry and Dundee Law offer other views of the city. Campus and hospital locations deserve their own transport check when choosing a home.

Work & opportunity

Games, digital technology and life sciences.

Dundee's council identifies life sciences, digital, games, cyber security and financial technology among its economic strengths. Universities and Dundee and Angus College provide education and training, while the waterfront and cultural venues support visitor-facing work. Search both specialist roles and the operations, administration and customer services that support them.

Dundee City Council and local education institutions are also part of the employment picture. Discover Work is the city's employment-support partnership. At the fair, ask employers about portfolio requirements, apprenticeships or training pathways, and whether work is at a central office, a campus or another site.

Make it practical
  • Show practical projects for digital and creative roles.
  • Ask about transferable skills and entry-level routes.
  • Check the workplace location before choosing housing.

Homes & cost of living

Waterfront, campus and hospital journeys.

Homes & everyday costs

Compare a city-centre or waterfront base with Broughty Ferry if coastal surroundings are a priority. Check access to the workplace, supermarket, evening activities and any childcare you need.

The official rent figure shown alongside covers Dundee and Angus. It is a broad-area benchmark, not a Dundee asking price for your preferred home. The council's Housing Options service explains private and social routes, while Dundee Homefinder provides assistance with private renting. Allow for bills, deposit, furnishings and transport as well as rent. Scottish rent inputs are mainly advertised new lets, which limits direct comparison with other UK nations.

Make it practical
  • Compare like-for-like properties and bedroom counts.
  • Inspect heating, damp, storage and noise.
  • Ask Housing Options about support if needed.

Getting around

Local buses and the October 2026 timetable changes.

Xplore Dundee provides local journey planning, fares and service updates. Its site announced timetable changes from 19 October 2026, so use current routes rather than an old saved map. A short distance on a map can still mean a connection or an uphill walk.

Build your travel plan around both the outward and homeward trips. If your job involves Ninewells, a campus, retail or hospitality shifts, enter the exact address and finish time. Compare walking, cycling and bus options, and ask about facilities such as cycle storage before relying on a particular mode.

Make it practical
  • Check weekday and weekend timetables separately.
  • Test the final walk from the stop.
  • Review service alerts before the fair.

Life beyond work

V&A Dundee, the waterfront and Broughty Ferry.

VisitScotland highlights V&A Dundee, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee Rep and The McManus, alongside the waterfront, Dundee Law and Broughty Ferry. These give the city a strong mix of galleries, performance and outdoor time without needing every outing to be a major trip.

Explore the waterfront and centre, then spend another visit in the neighbourhood where you might live. Look for the everyday places you will actually use: a library, exercise class, community group or reliable food shop. Check individual opening times and ticket arrangements rather than assuming all attractions are free.

Make it practical
  • Try a waterfront walk after work.
  • Use Dundee Law or Broughty Ferry for a change of scene.
  • Follow local venues for current programmes.

Settling in

Scottish services and local family arrangements.

Settle in well

Dundee City Council's Housing Options and Homefinder pages are useful first contacts when planning a move. Confirm Council Tax, waste collections and any parking arrangements for the actual property; student or shared-house arrangements should be checked rather than assumed.

Follow NHS inform for GP registration. For family moves, ask the council and providers about schools, childcare availability and opening hours before committing to a location. Keep a small contingency in your moving budget for travel, household essentials and the gap before your first salary.

Make it practical
  • Check services using the new postcode.
  • Arrange healthcare registration.
  • Keep tenancy and employment documents accessible.
