Living & working
in Bournemouth.

Bournemouth’s beaches are only one part of the picture. Finance, digital businesses, engineering and education shape the wider Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole economy. Living near the coast, the centre or a business site means weighing different journeys rather than treating the three towns as interchangeable.

01

Work & opportunity

Finance, digital work and the wider BCP economy.

BCP Council identifies digital, finance, engineering, tourism and education as important parts of the local economy. The wider Dorset and BCP working plan also highlights health, advanced manufacturing, marine and aerospace activity.

Build a shortlist around tasks you can do: financial operations, customer support, software, hospitality, care or technical production. Ask exhibitors where roles are based, how training works and whether hours change with the season. BCP Council’s jobs and training pages include apprenticeships and adult learning.

J.P. Morgan is one employer example: its Bournemouth hub covers operations, technology, client services and corporate functions, with early-career routes described on its website. Check the live recruitment pages for eligibility and available roles.

Make it practical
  • Search Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole separately.
  • Ask about shifts before choosing a home.
  • Use National Careers Service for course options.
02

Homes & cost of living

Coastal homes, central streets and workplace access.

Homes & everyday costs

Compare a central address with Boscombe, Southbourne and Winton as alternative starting points. Walk to your bus stop and assess noise, heating, storage and shared entrances during a viewing. Check whether accommodation advertised for a short stay is available as a year-round home.

The official rent figure shown alongside covers Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. It combines property sizes and existing and new tenancies; it is not an asking rent for a Bournemouth flat. Price a current shortlist, then add Council Tax, utilities, broadband, travel and one-off moving costs.

Make it practical
  • Compare like-for-like property sizes.
  • Confirm which bills are included.
  • Check parking arrangements for the exact address.
03

Getting around

Bournemouth station and Morebus connections.

Bournemouth station is on Holdenhurst Road. Morebus provides routes across Bournemouth and neighbouring towns; use its planner to compare home-to-work journeys at the hours you will travel. A town-centre base does not automatically make an outlying workplace easy to reach.

Test an early start and late return before accepting a commute. Check operator notices for diversions, ticket coverage and accessibility arrangements. For driving, include parking and congestion in the trial rather than comparing only map distances.

Make it practical
  • Save your usual stop and a backup route.
  • Check the final bus after a late shift.
  • Use National Rail for current station facilities.
04

Life beyond work

The coast through the seasons.

The official Bournemouth guide covers coastal activities and things to do throughout the year. Balance a beach visit with ordinary local routines: libraries, leisure facilities, parks and cultural events. The wider BCP area gives additional options without requiring every outing to be a long trip.

Visit your shortlisted area on a weekday as well as a busy weekend. Try the supermarket trip, a walk after work and an evening journey home. This gives a more useful picture of living here than a single summer visit.

Make it practical
  • Browse seasonal events before booking.
  • Explore council parks and leisure facilities.
  • Check conditions before water activities.
05

Settling in

Services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Make your move

BCP Council handles Council Tax, waste, parking, housing advice and school admissions. Its family pages signpost childcare and SEND support. Check the address carefully if your search crosses into neighbouring Dorset Council territory.

Keep the tenancy, inventory, employer details and travel plan together. Budget for the period before your first salary as well as the recurring monthly bill, and save fair contacts for follow-up applications.

Make it practical
  • Register with a GP near your address.
  • Check council school-admissions and childcare information.
  • Record arrival meter readings.
