Location guide / East Midlands

Living & working
in Northampton.

Northampton’s centre has services, culture and rail access, while industrial and logistics employment extends across the surrounding area. Abington Park and other green spaces add different settings to a home search. West Northamptonshire housing figures cover more than the town, so local listings remain essential to a budget.

  • Practical training routes

01

Work & opportunity

Town services, logistics and skills training.

West Northamptonshire’s current skills offer includes transport, warehousing and logistics, reflecting the importance of these sectors locally. The council itself is another employer example, with professional, administrative and public-service functions. Look beyond one job title: operations, customer services, maintenance and business support can offer different ways into the local market.

The council’s Skills Bootcamps pages provide a route to investigate retraining, with course details and eligibility to check directly. Do not assume every programme is open or appropriate for every applicant. At the fair, ask about the precise workplace, shift rotation and training arrangements. A Northampton-listed role at an industrial park can have different transport needs from a town-centre position.

Make it practical
  • Explore transport and logistics Skills Bootcamps.
  • Confirm eligibility and course availability.
  • Locate the role within West Northamptonshire.
02

Homes & cost of living

Northampton homes within West Northamptonshire figures.

Homes & everyday costs

Compare the centre for access to shopping and transport with areas around Abington Park or routes serving the hospital and industrial parks. Use actual timetables and a street visit to test the choice. A larger property further out may change the travel budget and the time available around work.

The official rent figure shown alongside covers West Northamptonshire. This wider authority includes Northampton and other towns and villages; it is not a town-only figure. It covers all sizes and existing and new tenancies rather than asking rents. Compare equivalent local listings and add council tax, energy, water, broadband, childcare and commuting as applicable.

Make it practical
  • Compare the same property size.
  • Include household bills and commuting.
  • Visit before signing.
03

Getting around

Town buses, rail and outlying work sites.

West Northamptonshire Council publishes bus timetables and route maps grouped by direction from Northampton, including separate information for industrial parks and the hospital. This is particularly useful when assessing whether a proposed shift can be reached without a car.

Northampton station is managed by London Northwestern Railway; use current rail information for your destination and time of travel. Allow for the connection from station or bus stop to work. Test the return journey as well as the outward trip, and confirm access or assistance needs directly. For driving, check parking arrangements with the employer and landlord.

Make it practical
  • Check both outward and return trips.
  • Plan for evenings and weekends.
  • Confirm access requirements.

04

Life beyond work

Abington Park and other town green spaces.

Abington Park combines green space with a museum, sports facilities, lakes and gardens. Becket’s Park provides another setting along the River Nene near the centre. These are practical places to explore when comparing neighbourhoods, rather than just attractions for a one-off visit.

Look at current museum, theatre and community programmes and identify an activity you could attend regularly. A scouting day should include ordinary errands and the evening journey home as well as sightseeing. Check park and venue opening arrangements directly, especially in winter, and distinguish a special heritage-event bus from a normal daily service.

Make it practical
  • Spend time in Abington Park.
  • Compare access to the town's other parks.
  • Check current facilities and opening information.

Settling in

West Northamptonshire services and family information.

Settle in well

West Northamptonshire Council provides council tax, housing, schools, family services and transport in Northampton. Use the full address to check the information you need. Families should confirm provider availability and application arrangements before fixing a moving or employment start date.

Use the NHS GP finder, check broadband and organise utilities. Record the inventory and meter readings when moving in, and confirm parking or shared-building arrangements. At the fair, ask about induction hours and temporary training locations: these may differ from the normal worksite and can require a separate travel plan for the first few weeks.

Make it practical
  • Check the council for your address.
  • Use the NHS GP finder.
  • Confirm arrangements before move-in.
