Living And Working In Leicester in 2022

February 9, 2022
Joanna Clare

Leicester is a city set within the county of Leicestershire which is in the East Midlands of England. It is officially the largest city in this area and is a little over 73 square kilometers. A cosmopolitan city, it is rich in both culture and diversity and for hundreds of years has attracted different races and nationalities.

The area, including Leicestershire, boasts the largest economy in the East Midlands so there is little surprise in learning that there are many companies and industries based on space and digital technologies, advanced manufacturing and engineering, finance, sciences, space and digital technologies continue to attract investments and have transformed the city in recent years. The county is also home to several familiar and well established companies that have chosen Leicester as their base.

Textile design and manufacturing also continues to be ever popular and given that in the middle of the 20th century, Leicester claimed to ‘clothe the world’ with its array of highly esteemed textiles, it shows no signs of slowing down yet.

Leicester has a fantastic university and is ranked in the top 25 universities in the Times Higher Education REF Research Power Rankings, appealing to many top academics from around the world.

Being only 143 kilometres from London, it can take as little as just over an hour to travel by train or you can fly direct to East Midlands Airport which is only a short drive from Leicester. Surrounded by excellent motorway and rail links, travel to and from Leicester couldn’t be easier.

This wonderful city that spans over 2000 years is full of hidden surprises. Set in the midst of one of England's most attractive counties, it is surrounded by pretty villages and rolling countryside. In Leicester itself you could visit the National Space City, explore the Museum and Art Gallery, appreciate the tranquillity at Abbey Park, enjoy some retail therapy in the plentiful and exciting shops and stores or visit the final resting place of King Richard the Third in Leicester Cathedral. His remains were discovered in a car park in 2012 by a team of archaeologists and made headline news.     Step back in time in the nearby enchanting Charnwood Forest which covers 170 square kilometres or visit some of the quaint market towns that are within easy reach.

Properties here are very affordable with a good variety of both older and newer homes. A small flat can be found for as little as £60,000 yet a more traditional family home with a mature garden can sell for around £200,000 - £250,000 but as all areas are unique and properties can differ enormously then it will definitely pay to shop around. House prices have increased recently by around 10% which is still slightly behind the national average and tend to be less expensive the further you travel into the actual city itself.

Wherever you choose to live in Leicester, you will find the people welcoming and always ready for a friendly chat.
